Ardent cricket fans were deeply disappointed as fog engulfed the fourth T20 match between India and South Africa at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday.
After the match was delayed and eventually canceled at 9:30 pm, fans flooded X with reactions, making Lucknow trending. Memes flooded social media, with many users criticizing officials for the long delay before the call-off. Frustrated fans also questioned the logic of holding a night match in the city during extreme winter.
District-level cricketer Garvit Sanghi drove from Balia specifically for the match. “Waah kya bat jo kahi nahi hota woh yaha UP mein and hamrae Lucknow mein hota hain,” he said.
Businessman Yogesh Rastogi arrived with seven family members and friends. He said, “After braving the traffic, we reached the stadium at 6:15 pm. We were extremely disappointed when the match was canceled after five inspections at 9:30 pm. We had compromised on other plans for this. Refunds are not a problem; we wanted to see the players in action, even if just for five overs.”
Entrepreneur Chinmoy Dev also shared similar views. “First of all, miles pass by with such difficulty, then parking at the stadium on important match days is a chore. Also, many of my friends have paid a lot to get good seats. We have to leave work to reach here on time, otherwise you get stuck in parking jams. After so much hard work, if you get to hear ‘the match is cancelled,’ then we have every right to react. Refunds? What refunds? This is not a solution, “he said.
The disappointment was even greater for professional Kaushik Kumar. “I canceled plans to come here with my family and an official meeting. I was looking forward to seeing some good cricket as the year ended, but it was all in vain. I still don’t understand why it took so long for the cricket board to understand the weather in Lucknow.”
