Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the performance of Indian universities in THE World University Rankings. According to the recent data released by Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer, Times Higher Education, the participation of Indian universities has increased tremendously since 2016. A total of 31 universities participated in 2016 and now the number has increased to 133. In 2024, 124 universities participated in the global ranking. This makes India the fourth most represented country in the ranking.
“India’s growing visibility in the world rankings is remarkable, driven by Narendra Modi’s internationalisation reforms. A record 133 Indian universities have applied for the 2025 rankings – up from 42 in 2017 – making India the fourth best represented university in the world,” Phil Baty wrote on microblogging site X.
Reposting Baty’s post, Modi said the government will continue to support its universities and provide more opportunities for growth and innovation. “It’s great to see India’s universities moving forward on the global stage! Our commitment to quality education is yielding encouraging results. We will continue to support our educational institutions and provide opportunities for growth and innovation. This will help our youth a lot,” the Prime Minister wrote while sharing Baty’s post.

Earlier on June 7, Nunzio Quacquarelli, CEO and Managing Director, QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd, said the last 10 years have seen a steady improvement in the performance of Indian universities in the QS World University Rankings under the Prime Minister’s leadership. He said 46 institutions participated in the rankings compared to 11 in 2015, which is a 318 per cent increase in 10 years and the best in the G20.
Reposting Quacquarelli’s post, Prime Minister Modi said, “Over the last decade, we have focused on qualitative changes in the education sector. This is reflected in the QS World University Rankings. Congratulations to students, teachers and institutions for their hard work and dedication. This term, we want to do even more to promote research and innovation.”
