Mehul Choksi is the main accused in PNB i.e. Punjab National Bank scam. There was a fraud of thousands of crores of rupees in this scam. Mehul Choksi was arrested in April 2025 in Belgium. This action was taken on India’s demand. Now the process of extradition is going on. Before extradition, the Belgian government had sought assurance from India regarding the security of Mehul Choksi and human rights concerns.
Actually, if Mehul Choksi is extradited to India, it will be kept in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. Especially in barrack number 12, he will have a cell. The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided this by consulting the Government of Maharashtra. Mehul Choksi will get many facilities in jail. Its cell will have at least 3 square meters of place. Furniture will not be included in this. This place will remain during the entire custody, if it proves guilty.
Mehul Choksi will be given clean thick cotton mats, pillows, sheets and blankets in the jail. If needed due to medical reason, you can also get a metal frame or a wooden bed. In addition, there will be adequate lights and air arrangements. Storage will be available to keep personal goods. Clean drinking water will be available every day. Medical facilities will be available 24 hours. Every day toilet and bathing facility will be available. Choksi will get out of the cell and give appropriate time for exercise and entertainment. Enough food will be available during custody. All these facilities are to protect the human rights of Choksi.
Now the question is, why did India give these assurances to Belgium? The reason is human rights concerns. Mehul Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal opposed extradition. He had said that Choksi will not get proper health care in India and political harassment can occur. Mehul Choksi is undergoing treatment for cancer. Due to his health, the Belgium Court has canceled the bail. The lawyer has planned an appeal. India sent assurances to solve these concerns in the extradition process. This extradition is followed by the rules of the treaty.
Mehul Choksi has cases under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. These crimes are also valid in Belgium Act. India has cited the United Nations crime and anti -corruption treaties. The CBI has given this argument. Nirav Modi, nephew of Mehul Choksi, is also accused in this scam. Choksi had earlier failed to extradite the dominica. Choksi’s lawyer Aggarwal said that Choksi was not officially declared a fugitive. He is ready to join the investigation from video conferencing.
Darial, Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused of scam of more than Rs 13,500 crore in PNB. In this scam, both of them allegedly cheated some bank officials of Mumbai’s Brady House Branch through fake letter of undertaking (LOU). Apart from this, many other banks are also investigating in cases of cheating on Mehul Choksi.
