If you regularly drive in fog, the choice between yellow and white fog lights is not cosmetic. This has a direct impact on visibility and driver fatigue, especially in areas like Delhi-NCR, where winter fog often reduces visibility to a few meters and contributes to frequent multi-vehicle accidents.
For what purpose are fog lights designed
Fog lights are mounted low and aimed downwards to illuminate the road surface near the vehicle. Their purpose is not to throw light far, but to help the driver see lane markings, road edges and obstacles without excessive glare from fog, rain or dust.
How do yellow fog lights behave in dense fog?
Yellow fog lights use longer wavelength light than white or blue lights. In real-world terms, this means that light scatters less when it hits fog or heavy moisture in the air.
In dense fog conditions, this low scatter can improve contrast, making lane markings, curbs and road edges slightly easier to pick out. Yellow lights create less glare for both the driver and oncoming traffic. This is one reason why yellow fog lamps were historically common on European vehicles designed for poor weather conditions.
The trade-off is brightness. Yellow fog lights illuminate a smaller area and do not illuminate the road as brightly as white lights. They are most effective when visibility is severely impaired.
Where white fog lights matter more
White fog lights are brighter and closer to natural daylight. They illuminate a wider area and provide better clarity when conditions are moderately poor, such as light fog, mist, rain or dust.
In these situations, white fog lights help drivers see in more detail on the road surface and slightly ahead. This is why most modern cars sold in India come with white fog lamps from the factory.
However, in very dense fog, white light may be reflected more strongly, increasing glare and sometimes reducing rather than improving usable visibility.

Which should you use if you often drive in fog?
For drivers who frequently encounter dense fog, such as early morning highway driving around Delhi-NCR in winter, yellow fog lights can provide practical benefits by reducing glare and improving contrast close to the vehicle.
If your driving involves a mix of light fog, mist and rain rather than persistent dense fog, white fog lights are a more versatile and practical option.
There is no universal best option. The decision should be based on how severe the fog typically is where you drive, not on appearance or trend.
