This year, Holi is on March 25, 2024, which is Monday when the festival of colors will be celebrated with great enthusiasm and enthusiasm by the Hindu community in India and other parts of the world by spraying brightly colored powder and water on each other. And while people can’t wait to come together in a riot of colors and laughter, it’s also essential to pay attention to skin care amid the festivities. While these colorful powders and water balloons add to the festive spirit, they may also contain harsh chemicals and colors that can cause skin irritations and allergies or cause temporary stains on the skin.
Additionally, prolonged exposure to sunlight while celebrating Holi outside can cause sunburn and skin damage, while health and skin experts warn that the combination of colors with sweat and water can clog pores and Can cause acne and other skin problems. Therefore, it is imperative to take proactive measures to protect and nourish our skin before and after the festival of Holi.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sharifa Chausse, dermatologist and cosmetologist at Dr Sharifa Skin Care Clinic and Apollo Spectra Hospital in Chembur, gave the following tips for pre-Holi care:
1- Apply a thick layer of moisturizer or any thick oil like coconut oil on your skin, which will help in creating a barrier between your skin and the complexion.
2- Apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF.
3- Wear protective clothing such as full sleeve clothing, goggles and scarf to protect eyes to prevent damage to hair due to colors.
4- Keep your nails short to prevent colors from accumulating inside your nails.
5- Instead of chemical colors, use herbal colors made from flowers, vegetables, leaves etc.
6- Before buying Holi colours, always check the ingredients present in it.
Dr Sharifa Chouz suggests the following care after Holi:
1- After playing Holi, wash the colors gently with lukewarm water.
2- Big ‘no’ to scrubbing or scrubbing your skin to remove colors.
3- Apply moisturizer on slightly damp skin immediately after bathing, which will help in maintaining moisture inside your skin.
4- Don’t apply retinol, glycolic acid, kojic acid or vitamin C (if these are in your skin care routine) to your face after playing with colors, as they make your skin more sensitive. You can start them again after 4 to 5 days and till then apply only moisturizer and sunscreen.
5- If you have irritation, plain coconut oil or aloe vera gel will also help soothe and heal your skin.
