All educational institutions were closed in Guwahati on Tuesday as heavy rains the previous day caused flooding in many parts of the city, causing traffic disruptions and overflowing drains.
The order issued by Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattavan said, “In view of the situation arising out of floods caused by heavy rains in Guwahati city on August 5, all educational institutions (both government and private) within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area are declared closed on August 6.”
Heavy rains lashed the city for about two hours on Monday afternoon, leading to waterlogging in many areas of the city, especially areas under flyovers, leading to traffic jams. Office-goers and others took several hours to reach their homes.
At some places, drivers had to abandon their vehicles on the road and walk through knee-deep water to reach their destination. There are reports that many people are spending the night in their offices and business establishments as they were unable to go home.
The situation improved in some places after midnight, but many areas remained flooded on Tuesday morning. The road leading to Shillong in Guwahati is flooded, leaving many vehicles stranded.
Despite government assurances of steps taken to control flash floods by clearing clogged drains ahead of the monsoon, the city, which is the gateway to the rest of the Northeast and the biggest commercial hub of the region, has been witnessing flooding due to heavy rains that last for more than half an hour.
On July 4, the 8-year-old boy, riding pillion on his father’s scooter, was swept away by floodwaters. His mutilated body was recovered three days later from a sewer two kilometres from the spot where he disappeared.
