Hit the dance floor: Studies show that dance is better than stress than regular exercise

But a study published in The Psychology of Sport and Exercise Journal highlights an alternative way to relieve stress- a better way. The study spots the dance and explains how it activates many systems in the body that help manage stress.

Many benefits of dance

The dance is just beyond being a workout. This is very overall because it attaches the brain, body and emotions, receiving physical and psychological benefits. The dance distinguishes the dance is the participation of music as it reduces anxiety by reducing the level of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone. And since the body movements are accompanied by music, promoting mood, releasing happy hormones such as dopamine and endorphin. The dance leads to a ‘flow kingdom’, where a dance is fully engrossed, temporarily surpasses their concerns.

Dance is also a social activity. Sometimes, people dance with a partner or with a group. The dance involves physical touch, such as holding hands while dancing that triggers the release of oxytocin, often called ‘love hormones’, further affects the feeling of calm relaxation.

Why dance can be better than traditional exercise

Although any form of vigorous physical activity releases stress, there are some advantages on other exercises such as running or weightlighting.

The dance essentially demands coordination, emotional expression and creativity in movements. This makes dance a pleasant experience. Some may get repeated exercises in the gym. Dancing always has something new, which separates it and makes it exciting.

The next time you feel upset, consider grooving and let it go to your favorite beats instead of your knee shock reaction to grinding in the gym. While nothing is wrong with gym workouts, the dancing provides a unique mixture of dancing movement, music and social connections that can be more effective, if not more.
