HC grants admission to 18 Christian students in Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday allowed 18 Christian students to enter St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University.
The court said that students will be able to attend their classes from Tuesday.
The court ruled on a petition filed by St. Stephen’s, seeking direction to DU to approve and upload the list of all Christian candidates sent to it by the college.
The college had sought direction to the university to open a fee payment portal for the 19 Christian students.
Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma said that the court is happy that 18 out of 19 students are entitled to get admission in St. Stephen’s College as per their merit.
The court said that DU had already stated in its affidavit that 14 out of 19 students were eligible for the concerned BA programme.
“Further, this Court is of the opinion that whether the suit is filed by some of the affected students or by all the affected students, in the eyes of law, they are just students seeking a future for themselves in an educational institution. And whether they are minorities Or non-minorities have no importance….
“After all, they are proud citizens of this proud country,” the judge said.
“The matter ends on a positive note in that 18 out of 19 students in this case have got admission into St. Stephen’s College of their choice,” he said.
DU had initially opposed the admission of 19 students selected by St. Stephen’s under the Christian quota, saying the college allotted seats without following the seat matrix and “as per its wish and choice”.
The college had said the intake of 19 students was within the “sanctioned intake” and did not exceed its permissible limit.
