Following Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU and Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine, the actor broke the Guinness record for longest-running character.
Hugh Jackman once held the record for being the longest-running live-action character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Robert Downey Jr will soon return to Marvel with a new character, Dr Doom. But it is 61-year-old Wesley Snipes who has broken the Guinness record. Blade is the longest-running Marvel character
Wesley unexpectedly appeared in Hugh and Ryan Reynolds’ recently released Deadpool & Wolverine as the half-vampire Daywalker Eric Brooks aka Blade.
Wesley has broken records for reprising the role of the vampire hunter in film. He first played the character in the 1998 film Blade, and returned 25 years later. Hugh held the record for the first time appearing as Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men and was expected to take over the record until Wesley made a cameo.
He also holds the record for the longest gap between characters in a Marvel film, having last played Blade 19 years and 231 days ago in the 2004 film Blade: Trinity. There was a 17-year gap between Alfred Molfina’s portrayal of Doctor Octopus in 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Wesley Snipes’ take on two decades of Blade
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Wesley claimed he had ‘very interesting conversations’ about bringing Blade back, but none of them came to fruition. This changed when he got a call from Ryan for a cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine.
Wesley said, “I thought it didn’t make any sense to me, but (when) you suddenly get a call from Ryan Reynolds 20 years later, you’re like, okay, I’ve got to take this call, let’s see what it’s about. He told me the idea… he said, yeah, and it’s like, okay, if you’re into it, we’re into it. Here we are.”
Following this, the actor said he worked out hard for about a month to get his body ‘ready for Blade.’ Mahershala Ali is in talks to replace Wesley in the Blade reboot.
Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26. The movie also features several other cameos by some fans.
