Athens, July 10 (Reuters) – Greek MPs on Thursday prepared to vote on the law, which will temporarily stop the processing of refuge applications of people coming from North Africa, a trick rights groups said illegal.
Crete’s island has a vote amidst an increase in migrant arrival and the flow was canceled this week as Libya’s talks with the Bengaji-based government.
One of the main gates in the European Union for the Middle East, Asia and Africa refugees and migrants, Greece has taken a rapid stance on migration as Prime Minister Kiriyakos Mitsotakis’ center-rights party came to power in 2019, which builds a fence on its northern land borders in the east.
The arrival of the sea of migrants going from North -Eastern Libya to Crete and Gavados of its southern islands, the closest European regions of North Africa, have increased this year.
In response, the Mitsotcice government on Wednesday proposed a law that migrants who illegally cross illegally crossing North Africa for Greece would not be able to file for three months.
One vote on the law, which would allow the authorities to exist quickly without any prior identity process, was expected later on Thursday or early Friday.
Human rights groups stated that asylum sanctions would violate the international and European law, and would call for the Greek government to remember it.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) said in a statement, “Taking asylum is a human right; stopping people from doing so is both illegal and inhuman.”
Mitsotakis – whose government controls 155 MPs in the 300 -Bethe Parliament – said on Wednesday that the ban was “an emergency response to an emergency”.
Greece has long been accused of helping migrants to exit migrants on their sea and land borders for a long time, also known as “pushbacks”, an illegal practice.
Two years ago, the Greek Naval Court accused 17 Coastguard officials, in which hundreds of people drowned. (Reporting by Angeliki Koutantou; Edit by Alex Richardson)
