Former Prime Minister Najib Razak was sentenced to 12 years in prison in a corruption case.
Now his punishment period has been reduced to half. There has also been a huge reduction in the amount of fine.
New Delhi. Malaysia’s Pardon Board said on Friday that it has halved the 12-year jail sentence of former Prime Minister Najib Razak and has also drastically reduced the fine. Razak was convicted in a corruption case related to the theft of billions of dollars from the government treasury. The board said in a statement that with the reduction of the sentence, Najeeb will be released till August 23, 2028. The board reduced the fine imposed on Najib from 210 million ringgit ($44.5 million) to 50 million ringgit.
Despite the sentence, Najib is still an influential leader in his party, the United Malaysia National Organisation. ‘United Malaysia National Organisation’ is now included in the unity government of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The pardon board did not explain why it reduced Najeeb’s sentence. Earlier, on behalf of the five-judge panel of the Federal Court, Chief Justice Maimun Tuan Mat said that they unanimously believed that the High Court judge gave the right decision and that Najib’s appeal had no merit. The court had proved Najeeb guilty and confirmed the punishment. The court had said that it is our unanimous view that the evidence given during the trial points towards guilt on all seven charges.
