Police have registered a case against a 32-year-old former IIT Bombay student for secretly recording videos of male students living in the institute’s hostel while they were taking bath, officials said on Friday.

The incident came to light on Thursday when the institute’s security inspector approached the Powai police station with a complaint against the former student for recording and sharing private photos/videos of students without their consent, an official said.
He said that the incident took place on the fifth floor of hostel number 14 of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay located in Powai area.
He said that the accused completed M.Tech in Electrical stream from this premier institute in July this year.
“Since he has not got a job yet, he came to the campus for two days on October 11 on a temporary entry pass on the recommendation of a student.
While staying in the hostel, she secretly recorded videos of male students taking bath and using the toilet,” he said.
However, some students caught the accused red-handed and took him to the security officials of the institute, saying that upon checking his phone they found several videos of him using the students’ bathroom and toilet.
Since no student came forward to lodge a complaint against him, the security inspector did so on Thursday as per the instructions of the institute administration, he said. He said that based on the complaint, a case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and further investigation is underway.
