Paris PM Office Blast: After the resignation of Sebastien Lecornu in Paris, a van exploded near Hotel Matignon, causing a massive fire there. Considering the seriousness of the situation, security forces have been deployed there.
No one was harmed in this explosion in Paris.Paris. On Tuesday, just a day after the resignation of France’s new Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, the sound of explosions was heard near the French Prime Minister’s office in Paris. A van caught fire due to the explosion. In pictures on social media, thick black smoke is seen rising from the area.
Quoting witnesses, Le Parisien reported in a report that three explosions were heard near the Hotel Matignon in Paris, where Sébastien Lecornu was to hold meetings after his resignation.
It is not clear what caused the explosion or fire in the van, which reportedly belongs to a public lighting company. However, a firefighter told reporters that the fire was caused by a mechanical fault in the company’s equipment. The street, Rue de Varenne, has since been cordoned off and police officers deployed to prevent entry.
Pictures and videos from the incident scene, which are becoming increasingly viral on social media, show a van on fire, while emergency services are trying to control the fire. Local media have reported that the fire was limited to the van and did not spread to any nearby buildings.
Sebastien Lecornu resigns, political crisis deepens in France
On the other hand, France’s new Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu resigned from his post on Monday. Lecornu had formed his cabinet a day earlier and remained in office for less than a month. After Lecornu’s resignation, French President Emmanuel Macron has very few options left.
The French presidential office said in a statement that President Macron had accepted Lecornu’s resignation. According to many opinion polls, Macron’s popularity has fallen to a record low. Lecornu became Prime Minister in September, replacing François Bayrou.
There has been a political deadlock in French politics since Macron announced snap elections last year. Far-right and leftist MPs have more than 320 seats in the National Assembly, while centrists and their ally the Conservatives have 210 seats and no party has an absolute majority.
