Eating too much sugar may increase risk of depression: Study

The study, published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, found that people who preferred sweet foods had a higher risk of vascular problems such as depression, diabetes and stroke. Using data from the UK Biobank, researchers divided participants into three categories: the health-conscious, the omnivorous, and the sweet-toothed.

Health conscious people prefer fruits and vegetables over animal-based and sugary foods. Omnivores prefer most foods, including meat, fish and some vegetables, as well as sweets and desserts. People with a sweet tooth prefer sugary foods and sugary drinks and are less interested in healthier options like fruits and vegetables.

The researchers looked at UK Biobank data on blood samples where 2,923 proteins and 168 metabolites were measured to see how these levels changed in each group. They found that the group with a sweet tooth had worse blood markers for inflammation and glucose levels, indicating higher risk for metabolic and mental health conditions.

The sugar-loving group had a 31 percent higher risk of depression than the other groups. Additionally, higher inflammatory markers, glucose and lipid profiles were found in the sweet tooth group. Whereas, health-conscious individuals were seen to have a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. In contrast, the health-conscious group showed a lower risk for heart disease and stroke.

These findings underscore the important role of food preferences in our long-term health. The study highlights the importance of controlling sugar intake for better health outcomes, making us all responsible for our health.

‘Diabetes rates were higher in the group with a sweet tooth’

Professor Nofar Geifman, senior author of the study and Professor of Health and Biomedical Informatics at the University of Surrey, said: “The foods you like or dislike appear to be directly linked to your health. If your favorite foods are cakes, sweets and sugary drinks, the results of our study show that this may have a negative impact on your health. We found that the sugar-eating group was 31% more likely to have depression. We also found that the sweet tooth group had higher rates of diabetes, as well as vascular heart conditions, compared to the other two groups.”

He added, “Processed sugar is an important factor in many people’s diets, and these results are further evidence that, as a society, we should be doing everything we can think of before we eat it.” Emphasizing that no one wants to tell people what to do, our job is just to provide information.”
