The natural compounds in broccoli, in addition to treating stroke, can help improve the success rate by up to 60 percent.
Broccoli has the reputation of not being liked by everyone. Despite being one of the healthiest green vegetables that can be included in the everyday diet, people don’t really like or prefer broccoli. However, we should have listened to our parents when they told us to include this vegetable in our daily diet – a recent study conducted by scientists at the Heart Research Institute in Australia says that sulforaphane – a compound found in this vegetable can revolutionise the prevention and treatment of stroke.
How Can Broccoli Prevent Blood Clots?
A stroke is a condition in which blood flow to the brain is disrupted, which can lead to permanent disability or death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, thousands of people suffer a stroke each year — this is primarily caused by a disruption of blood flow to the brain, known as an ischemic stroke.

However, a recent study may revolutionise the way we take care of our health to reduce the risk of stroke. The study says that broccoli contains a natural compound that can reduce the risk of blood clot formation and may also increase the effectiveness of existing drugs used in treating blood clots. Hence, consuming broccoli every day can reduce the risk of stroke to a great extent.

Broccoli derived compounds and tissue plasminogen activators
Dr. Zhuo Liu of the Heart Research Institute, the lead researcher of the study, said in a media release that patients with ischemic stroke are usually given tissue plasminogen activator – however, this is only successful in 20 percent of cases. But when patients are treated with a compound derived from broccoli in addition to the drug, it can increase the success rate to 60 percent. Blood thinners usually have a bleeding side effect that is not associated with this natural compound. The study also indicated a new, broccoli-derived preventive and anticoagulant treatment to prevent blood clots and stroke.
