Smriti Chauhan on Akshaye’s look
Costume designer Smriti Chauhan talks about working on Aditya Dhar’s espionage thriller in the latest episode of Unfolding Talents (UT). digital commentary Channel on YouTube.
Chauhan shared that the original plan was to dress Akshay in Pathani attire. However, the actor had other ideas and suggested mixing it up by making his character wear kurta-jeans in the film.
“We also gave him kurta-jeans. It was a very important input by Akshay sir himself, that we should not forget that he is also from the streets. It means a lot, because we also see his rise in the film as he moves on to join a political party later in the story. So, we had a journey where we see him distressed in linen and denim, and then cut into a silk-wool pathani, which is one of the most important looks in the film. Is,” Chauhan shared.
He recalled that there was a lot of debate with Akshay over the look, with several trials being conducted to include a Pathani adorned with rich embroidery, but the actor did not agree.
There came a time when Akshay said, “I’m not sure whether we will take this route or not”, after which the costume designer explained that they could not forget that his character comes from the streets and there had to be ruggedness in his vibe.
Talking about his look in the viral scene where he is attracted to Fa9la, Chauhan said that all the people wearing white created a challenge for the color scheme.
“Initially, the idea was that all the dancers would be in black. But if you look at the original Balochis, they wear a lot of white. So Aditya sir suggested that we wear white because that’s the basic look… We decided that Akshay sir should wear all black, while all the dancers would be in white. Rehman Dakat was awarded the Sher-e-Baloch, so we had to make him look different. We discussed what colors he should wear. But I was sure she would have to wear black. Everyone immediately agreed, and keeping it rooted in Balochi culture, I stuck with a Balochi pathani for her.
