Two people also died in accidents related to Typhoon Krathon.

Typhoon Krathon made landfall in Taiwan’s major port city Kaohsiung on Thursday, bringing torrential rains and strong winds to the southern part of the island. Strong winds caused by Krathon caused trees to fall and roads to be submerged, forcing schools and shops to be closed. The Meteorological Department said that Krathon made landfall in Kaohsiung’s industrial Siaogang district at around 12:40 pm. In this, winds with a maximum speed of 126 kilometers per hour blew continuously. Later the speed of cyclonic wind increased to 162 kilometers per hour. The storm is expected to move slowly northwards and weaken by Friday before reaching the capital Taipei. Earlier the typhoon was expected to move towards the Chinese coast via the Taiwan Strait. Strong winds blew in Taipei on Thursday, but there was very little rain.

The local administration in Kaohsiung has issued an advisory to protect people from potentially destructive winds and rain. They have been asked to take shelter in safe places. Due to strong winds, many places were flooded and many shops and houses collapsed. The slow-moving storm approached Taiwan at a speed of about 4 km per hour. The storm flooded the eastern and southern parts of the island over the past five days, forcing thousands of people to evacuate from mountainous or low-lying areas. The closure of business activities for two days is understood to have adversely affected the island’s high-tech economy.

Roads deserted like curfew
Roads in Kaohsiung were empty due to strong winds and heavy rain. Its impact has been less in the capital Taipei. Many residents woke up to mobile phone alerts on Thursday, urging them to seek shelter from potentially dangerous winds. The weather service posted a Facebook message warning residents of Kaohsiung and Pingtung counties not to go out after the typhoon passed over their area even after the weather calmed down for a while. According to Taiwan’s fire department, at least 123 people were injured and two died around the island due to weather events caused by Krathon. One of them died after being hit by stones that fell on the road in south-eastern Taitung county and the other while pruning tree branches in Hualien city. Two other persons are missing.
