How can inflammation cause hair loss?
Air pollutants cause chronic inflammation in the scalp skin, hair follicles, oil glands and protective skin layer. ,As a result of all this inflammation, the follicles switch from a growing phase to a shedding phase, resulting in increased hair fall, a condition we call telogen effluvium”, says Dr. Banodkar.
Hair fall occurs due to weakening of hair roots.

As a result, the hair becomes dry, brittle, starts breaking, becomes split and loses its natural shine resulting in the hair remaining dull, lifeless and dirty even after washing.
Buildup can cause hair loss
Pollutants can accumulate in excessive amounts on the scalp, disrupting the oil balance, making the roots sticky but the hair dry. ,Pollutants cause dandruff, itching and redness on the skin, especially when pollution is combined with heat and sweat, says Dr Banodkar. Apart from this, he also told that the use of helmet also causes disarray and also affects the hair. ,Sweat, hard water and use of styling products cause a lot of problems on the scalp, and if moisture is added, it leads to blockage and excessive breakage of hair”, he mentioned.
How to protect hair from pollution?
Although curbing pollution is not immediately in our hands, still there are some effective solutions to deal with the problem of hair fall. Dr. Banodkar suggests using a mild cleanser on the scalp, which can help reduce the effects of fungus that accumulates on the scalp along with sweat and pollution. “Use lots of antioxidants like vitamin C, niacinamide, which help reduce inflammation overall. Avoid tying hair too tightly to reduce friction and dust accumulation on hair, and see a dermatologist if you notice thinning, excessive dandruff, or sudden hair loss”, he concludes.
