The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Delhi government to stop school children from participating in outdoor sports during the highly polluted winter months from November to January.
As per ANI report, Justice Sachin Dutta, while addressing the plea of minor students, emphasized that the authorities are not adequately protecting the health of children and the annual sports calendar should be revised to avoid outdoor events during these dangerous months.
The court said, “You cannot call children to cause damage to their lungs. You have to change your calendar accordingly.”
The judge ordered the education department to submit a status report within four weeks and scheduled the next hearing for January 13, 2026. Senior advocate Sheel Trehan, representing the minor students, highlighted that several outdoor sporting events were planned this month despite very poor air quality.
He said that the education department is responsible for organizing the sports calendar. Trehan also presented a photograph of a pulmonologist in the court, which showed the harmful effects of polluted air on children’s lungs.
Asked whether the Supreme Court had examined a similar issue, Trehan confirmed that Supreme Court had directed CAQM Considering sporting activities when implementing GRAP restrictions.
Justice Dutta told the Delhi government, “Do you believe that these are bad months? You should plan so that no sporting event is held then. You should schedule the event after the board exams.”
The government responded that only a few outdoor sporting events took place, and winters in Delhi were pleasant. However, she assured the court that she would consult the education department. Trehan described holding the Games under such circumstances as “shocking” and “criminal negligence”. The petition argues that Delhi’s winter air often reaches severe and dangerous levels, forcing children to play in such conditions, endangering their health and violating their right to life.
