As Diwali approaches, deep cleaning your home doesn’t just mean dusting and clearing away the mess – it’s also the right time to evaluate what’s in your kitchen. Many everyday items that seem harmless may be quietly harming your health, leaching out toxins or contributing to inflammation and other problems over time. This festive season, consider discarding such items and replacing them with safer, healthier alternatives to keep both your home and body in good condition.

Certified dietitian Kiran Kukreja, who is an expert in weight management as well as skin and hair health, has highlighted seven kitchen items that you should consider giving up while doing your Diwali cleanup this year. In an Instagram video posted on October 11, she explains how these items are silently harming your health — even adding toxins to your body — and recommends safer alternatives.
1. Refined vegetable oil
Kiran recommends avoiding refined vegetable oils, which can trigger chronic inflammation in the body. Instead, she recommends healthier alternatives like cold-pressed mustard, coconut or peanut oil.
2. Canned Spices
According to Kiran, you should get rid of packaged spices, “as they are more prone to adulteration. Instead, choose whole spices and grind them fresh at home.”
3. Refined sugar
Refined sugar is highly processed and can be harmful to health. Dietitians recommend choosing a natural, unprocessed alternative, Daga Mishri, while emphasizing that it should still be used in moderation.
4. Aluminum and non-stick utensils
Aluminum and old non-stick utensils are harmful because their chemical coating can leach into the food you are cooking and reach your plate and increase toxicity levels in your body. Instead, Kiran recommends using cast iron or stainless steel cookware.
5. Soybean pieces
Processed soybean chunks are extremely unhealthy as they contain hardly any protein. “They contain mostly refined flour, which reduces the nutritional value. Instead, choose whole soybeans for pure protein and essential nutrients,” explains the nutritionist.
6. Aluminum Foil
According to Kiran, wrapping hot food in aluminum foil can leach metal into the food. She recommends using parchment paper as a safe alternative for packaging.
