Pondicherry Central University has announced that all examinations scheduled for Saturday have been postponed, and declared a holiday for all classes due to Cyclone Ditvah, PTI reported.
A release from the university registrar on Friday night said examinations were postponed and classes canceled following a communication from the Coast Guard regarding the cyclone and heavy rains.
The release said that the revised date of examinations will be announced in due course.
Moreover, in a precautionary move against the incoming Cyclone Ditvaha, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday in all schools across the state on Saturday. No special classes will be held in any school in the state.
According to a press release from the School Education Department, it said, “The Meteorological Department has said that there will be heavy rainfall over coastal districts and adjoining districts on Saturday (today). Therefore, all schools across Tamil Nadu will remain closed on Saturday (today). No special classes should be conducted in schools.”
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that Cyclone ‘Ditvah’, which is currently near Sri Lanka and south-west Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify slightly and move towards northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast by early November 30. This could bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible urban flooding across various southern states.
The cyclonic storm is moving north-northwestwards across the Bay of Bengal, currently 220 km away from Karaikal and continuously moving towards north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coast. According to IMD, it is expected to reach in the early hours of November 30.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and Rayalaseema from November 29 to December 1, while extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Rayalaseema on November 30.
