Late on Tuesday night, when many youth were ready to appear for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), which was centered in Delhi, an unexpected incident happened for them. CUET (UG), which was scheduled for May 15 across India, was postponed only in the capital and moved to May 29 due to “unavoidable reasons”, according to a public notice issued by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Shaurya Nahar, 18, a resident of Kirti Nagar, says, “On Tuesday night, I tried to download my admit card and found that the NTA website for CUET had crashed and information about all the names and locations of the exam centers had gone missing ” Have to appear in English and General examination on Wednesday. Nahar says, “I was very surprised because none of us expected such a lapse in the system. It felt even worse because my friends whose centers were in Noida were able to appear for the exam. Now I just have to wait till 29th May. This is absolutely unfair… what kind of website has been created which is playing with the future of so many students.
Similarly, Simran, 19, a resident of Kailash Colony, whose exam center was Evergreen School in Vasundhara Enclave, says, “NTA is actually pretending to be the national ‘trauma’ agency for me after I learned that our exam was postponed. Has been. At 10 pm on the eve of the paper! The worst part is that I had no way of verifying whether it was fake news or real. It took four hours of my preparation and sleep time to confirm whether I had to take the exam the next day. To top it all, the official website crashed and my distant relatives and friends in other cities were calling me and my parents to check if the update was true.’
Those traveling from outside the city had to face a double blow. Among them was 18-year-old Rahul Gandhi from Panipat (Haryana), whose examination center was Government Co-Education Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Rohini Sector 21. “I was going to Delhi on Tuesday night; My elder brother was taking me to the city by car when I came to know that the exams had been cancelled. We had to return midway and when we reached home, my parents started scolding me and said ‘it’s a joke’. I had to show them the notice and convince them that all this was true and that I would not miss the exam. But now I am more worried about appearing for the exam at a later date as I fear that the question paper may be tougher than the question paper given by others in the rest of the country on the original exam date,” says Gandhi.
While Shubham Rawat, 17, from Faridabad (Haryana) says, “Despite choosing Faridabad and Ghaziabad as my first two preferences, I was allotted an exam center here, so I had to make special arrangements to come to Delhi. Now I am staying with my relatives (uncle) at their residence near Akshardham, and my exam center is in Delhi Cantt… There was no official announcement or any message to confirm what actually happened, so I Almost reached the center. Now I have to start this journey again.
Many youngsters who felt disappointed about the “mismanagement” and “trauma”, some even heaved a sigh of relief thinking about the extra time they got for better preparation. Take, for example, 17-year-old Avinav Bhatt, who was about to appear for exams at Deshbandhu College in Kalkaji. “When I learned about the news of my exams being cancelled, I was partially disappointed, but also happy because now I have more time to prepare.” Similarly, Sara Khan, 17, a resident of Vasundhara Enclave, whose center was Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Pooth Kalan in northwest Delhi, says, “I honestly feel bad for my friends who chose Noida as their center instead of Delhi. Chose because they had to. exam while I have got more time to prepare. Honestly I couldn’t be happier! Thank God I had not planned any holidays this year and hence there is no stress of rescheduling everyone’s holiday plans at home due to the extended CUET calendar.
Bhavishya Goyal, 17, resident of New Ashok Nagar, says, “I chose Delhi as my center because I live in Delhi and I was allotted Mount Carmel School in Anand Niketan. Most of my friends chose Noida for the exam centre. And now that my exams have been postponed, I have to bear the exam stress longer than them because they get to enjoy the post-exam fun while I am still studying.
Seeing all this uncertainly, 17-year-old Neetu Rai, a resident of Sector 87, Gurugram, says that her examination center till now was Holy World Public School in Nazgfar. “But ever since there has been this delay in the exam, I am feeling disappointed as it has created many new hurdles in an already complex system,” says Rai. The exam is scheduled to be held on May 16. Now I am being told that it will be visible only in the evening. But what if the website crashes again? The reporting time for the exam is 8 am. How can I manage all this stress and be on time?”
