The Oscars may have snubbed the Greta Gerwig-Margot Robbie duo from major nominations, but audiences’ immense love for the pink-tastic live-action Barbieland has spoken for itself. On March 9, just one day before the 2024 Academy Awards, Letterboxd released its list of the ‘Most Viewed Best Picture Nominees of the 21st Century.’ Among these top 10 blockbusters are two that earned Best Picture awards at this year’s ceremony – Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The full list, in chronological order, is: La La Land (2016), Dune (2021), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Little Women (2019), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), Barbie (2023), Top Gun Maverick (2022), Lady Bird (2017) and Oppenheimer (2023).
Film lovers were happy to see three of Greta Gerwig’s films – Little Women, Barbie and Lady Bird – make the list. But before the social platform could reveal the public’s vote on the matter, Warner Bros. chief Pam Abedy made a heartwarming statement to the BBC that will send all Barbie fans into overdrive. The American film studio is all set for a sequel to last year’s supernova box-office hit. He indicated that Greta Gerwig and Warner Bros. were “always talking” about the possibility of building on her previous success. In the same interview, Abedy also revealed that she was “definitely” heartbroken when Gerwig and Robbie were snubbed from Academy nominations for the Best Director and Best Lead Actress categories, respectively.

Warner Bros.’s Barbie 2 Possibilities:
Greta Gerwig’s collective cinematic masterpiece was the highest-grossing film of 2023, grossing $1.45 billion at the global box office. All of these numbers and Gerwig’s contributions to the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group are clearly visible at the studio. But even though the WB team would love to make another film, the ball is ultimately in the court of the “visionary” director, whom Abdi also called “one of the best filmmakers working today.”
Gerwig is also open to a sequel, but only if she gets “Undertow.”
Although Robbie and Margot were removed from the list, Ryan Gosling secured a spot as one of the Best Supporting Actor nominees. He will also perform a “huge” live performance of his Barbie song I’m Just Kane, which could include 65 male backup dancers – it’s ‘excellent’! In fact.
