The Supreme Court has given an important verdict to address the arbitrariness of the coaching centers. The court has made all states mandatory for coaching centers to make strict rules within two months, which ensure compulsory registration, student security and a grievance redressal mechanism. Additionally, coaching centers should implement measures to protect the mental health of students. The central government is required to submit an affidavit about these instructions within three months.
New rules for coaching centers
The Supreme Court said that coaching centers work without nationwide nationwide clear guidelines, which affect the safety and mental welfare of students. The court directed all the states to implement the rules within two months, which required each coaching center to register to monitor the activity. Standards related to fire safety, building security, and emergency exit should be followed. A grievance redressal system should be established, which provides a transparent procedure to address grievances from students and parents.
Special emphasis on student mental health
The Supreme Court expressed serious concern over the increasing stress and mental pressure in the coaching centers. The court determined that all educational institutions, especially coaching centers, should formulate and implement a uniform mental health policy. Specific measures should be applied to achieve this.
Coaching centers with 100 or more students are required to appoint at least one certified counselor, psychological, or social worker with special training in mental health of children and adolescents.
Centers with less than 100 students should install a formal referral system with external mental health experts, ensuring that students get professional assistance when necessary. Coaching centers were advised to avoid separation of students based on educational performance and public shading, as these practices put improper pressure on students.
According to the official data shared by Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar in the Lok Sabha, the students were accounted for suicides 7.6 percent in all suicides cases Reported in India in 2022. However, it marked a small decline in 2021 from 8.0 percent and 8.2 percent in 2020.
