Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday claimed that the Constitution is being “attacked” by the BJP and accused the saffron party of controlling institutions like the Election Commission, bureaucracy and central agencies.
He also said that no power can stop caste census and removing the 50 percent cap on reservation.
Addressing the ‘Samvidhan Samman Sammelan’ in Ranchi ahead of the Jharkhand assembly elections, Gandhi alleged, “The Constitution is under constant attack from all sides, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and it must be protected.” ‘
In a no-holds-barred attack, he accused the BJP of “controlling the Election Commission, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax Department, bureaucracy and judiciary”.
He claimed, “BJP also controls money and institutions but we have honesty. Congress fought the Lok Sabha elections without money.”
Gandhi said the caste census is “a medium to get social X-ray but PM Modi is opposed to it”.
“However, no force can stop the caste census, institutional survey and removal of the 50 per cent cap on reservation, despite the support of the media or the judiciary,” he said.
Attacking Modi, he said the Prime Minister often reiterates that he respects the Constitution but in reality ‘he is making it hollow’.
Gandhi said that BJP calls the tribals as ‘forest dwellers’ instead of ‘Adivasi’. He alleged that the BJP is trying to destroy the rich cultural heritage, history, ancient tradition and thousands of years old medical practices of the tribals.
He said that thousands of years of thoughts including those of Mahavir, Buddha, Birsa and Ambedkar are behind the Constitution.
“Our education system has failed to teach us about the indigenous people and the history of tribals, farmers and OBCs is being destroyed by the BJP,” he alleged.
Gandhi alleged that OBCs were marginalized as there were only three OBC officers among the top 90 IAS officers in the bureaucracy, while there were no Dalits or tribals in key positions, including the Finance Ministry.
“There are no Dalits, tribals or OBCs in the top management of 250 corporate companies or in key positions in Bollywood,” he claimed.
He said that the population of Dalits and tribals in the country is 15 percent and 8 percent respectively, while the OBC population will be around 50 percent.
He alleged that while industrialists like Adani and Ambani were invited for the Ayodhya Ram temple consecration, President Draupadi Murmu was not allowed because she is a tribal.
He also accused the saffron party of not allowing the President during the inauguration of the new Parliament because he is a tribal.
Gandhi claimed that 60 percent of the GST is being paid by the poor 50 percent of the country while one percent of capitalists have amassed 40 percent of India’s capital.
Gandhi said that there is a fight going on between the Constitution and Manu’s ideology for years.
“The most important thing now is to protect our Constitution,” he said.
This was Gandhi’s first visit to Jharkhand after the announcement of the assembly election schedule.
Assembly elections in Jharkhand will be held in two phases on November 13 and 20 and counting of votes will take place on November 23.
Earlier in the day, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren said the India Bloc will contest the upcoming assembly elections together and the Congress and JMM will field their candidates on 70 out of 81 seats.
He said seat-sharing talks are going on with the alliance partners – RJD and Left parties – for the remaining 11 seats.
