Car Sunroof in India: Style Statement or Overhyped Feature?

Car sunroof is one of the most visible status symbols on Indian roads. It was once reserved for luxury sedans and imported SUVs, but now it’s finding its way into compact hatchbacks and budget crossovers. Over the past few years, OEMs have been quick to notice its attraction towards Indian buyers, with sales data showing a strong preference for variants with a sunroof, even though they command a considerable premium.

Much of the sunroof’s appeal on our shores rests on its premium perception rather than any actual practicality. For the average buyer, it offers a touch of luxury in a mass market model. The feature photos come out well, looks impressive in showroom brochures, and gives the illusion of airiness for those sitting beneath it. But the reality is that for most owners the sunroof remains firmly closed. Our country’s heat, dust, humidity and traffic make it much less useful than its marketing suggests. So, has it now become a style statement driven by trends, a simple checkbox to tick in a brochure?

Perception or practicality?

Sunroof is one of the most sought-after features, which impacts pricing and variant-mix strategies across the board. The promise of a sunroof alone can sway buyer decisions, with some models devoting the majority of total sales to variants offering this feature. The reason is simple: in a market where car ownership holds highly aspirational value, features that indicate luxury hold symbolic importance, regardless of real-world use. A sunroof will always be ‘premium’ in India, even when paired with basic fabric seats and plastic interior trims.

But it fails to live up to its potential in our tropical climate, where ambient temperatures often exceed 40°C and there are high levels of humidity throughout the year. In such a situation, opening the roof is more of an inconvenience than a pleasure. Even with the glass panels closed, the cabin can heat up rapidly under direct sunlight, causing the AC to work harder and increasing overall fuel consumption.

Pollution levels are another factor that limits fun, especially in urban areas where even an open sunroof can invite dust and traffic noise. Constant exposure to heat and debris can also cause rubber seals to deteriorate over time, leading to leaks during heavy rains.

Safety and misuse of sunroof on Indian roads

The most worrying aspect of the sunroof’s popularity in India is how often it is misused. Sights of people standing with their heads out of the open sunroof have become common on all roads and especially highways. This behavior is not only illegal, but also dangerous, putting individuals at risk for potential accidents, injuries from sudden braking, or collision with debris. While automakers warn against it, the lack of enforcement allows the problem to persist as a social media trend rather than a safety concern.

Even if used responsibly, the sunroof poses another potential concern in case of rollovers or high-speed impacts. OEMs take structural integrity into account during design, but the glass area is inherently less resistant than solid roof panels, which safety-conscious buyers may want to consider.
