Book Review: ‘The Dilmes of Working Women’ reflects women’s internal conflicts in Japan
Japan is infamous for its gender inequality. Some women occupy political and corporate leadership positions. They shoulder heavy homework and child care burden.
This year, the World Economic Forum finished 118 out of 148 countries for Linga equality.
The short-story collection by heavenly novelist Fumio Yamamoto “The Dilmes of Working Woman” tells about this reality. Released on Tuesday, it is being published in English for the first time.
The original was a best seller in Japan and won the country’s prestigious Noki literary award in 2001. After the author’s death in 2021, the novelist U Nagira wrote in the Asahi newspaper that Yamamoto had quietly and really depicted the inner life that women could live in peace.
This book brings the life into an emotionally clear stories about the five raw, emotionally that men and women that often do not ensure what they want and are often squeezed by social and family expectations.
The title story is about an employee of a major corporation who does not know what to do about her lover who is itching to propose marriage. Another breast cancer is about a woman in the 20s with cancer, who has a mastectomy. She tells her friends that she wants to regenerate as a type of flatworm because they are revived when they are cut into pieces.
The readers will trample women – and men – by their colleagues and then stand for themselves. And a character that cannot find out if he gives importance to professional success and should he spend his life with an underchiver who cares for him.
Brian Bergstrom deserves credit for bringing these stories to English speakers with his competent translation.
