Now that you have got a new set of hair through hair transplant, comes a huge responsibility to take good care of it. Like any other surgical method, hair transplant also comes with a certain set of dos and don’ts. As simple as shampooing your hair or applying any hair care products to your scalp, proper and careful care after a hair transplant is important to protect your new graft, maintain scalp health, and ensure long-lasting, natural-looking results.
Dr Arika Bansal, Senior Hair Transplant Surgeon, Eugenix Hair Sciences, who has celebrity clients including filmmaker Boney Kapoor, singer Shankar Mahadevan and cricketers like Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Azharuddin, tells HT Lifestyle that after a hair transplant, you should shampoo your hair using a mild shampoo with gentle hands. She also emphasizes on trying sulphate-free shampoo for better results.
In this ultimate guide in consultation with Dr. Bansal, we have listed some basic guidelines and precautions to consider after your hair transplant procedure.
1. Shampoo only after a week
“It is advisable to shampoo your hair only after the seventh day of treatment,” suggests Dr. Bansal. She also recommends using normal saline spray on the recipient and donor areas to keep the area clean. “For the first week, I would recommend you use a betadine scrub on the areas where the skin grafts come off. Another thing to consider before shampooing your hair is to use lukewarm water, which is neither too hot nor too cold,” she adds.
2. Hair products must wait longer
Experts recommend not using any hair care product or medicine after one month. “I usually tell my patients that they should wait at least a month after the procedure before applying any type of hair product,” she suggests. However, she gives the green signal to hair dye and hair colour. Dr. Bansal suggests, “When it comes to hair dye or hair color, I would advise that they can start using it 2 to 3 weeks after the date of the procedure. She emphasizes on using only ammonia-free and PPD-free hair colors or dyes that do not irritate the scalp. Additionally, she suggests completely avoiding hair waxes or hair gels on the transplanted hair.
3. Common symptoms after hair transplant
“One of the most common symptoms that is observed in most patients after a hair transplant is swelling of the forehead and face. This can occur within 2 to 3 days of the procedure,” says Dr. Bansal.
4. Say no to mobile phones
The expert says that after hair transplant, people should limit the use of mobile phones, especially while bowing the head. She adds, “Sit straight after the procedure and massage your forehead so that there is no swelling.” One of the other side effects you may notice is a slight numbness in the recipient area and donor area, which resolves very quickly within 4 to 6 weeks.
5. Stay indoors as much as possible
“After hair transplant, it is advisable to stay indoors as much as possible,” says Dr. Bansal. She adds, “Dust and pollutants can cause some follicles to grow, leading to bacterial infection, however, you can continue activities like gyming, running, yoga, exercise and swimming after the 8th day of the procedure.”
6. Avoid junk food
Junk food is a big problem after a hair transplant, as your body is still recovering from the surgical procedures. Dr. Bansal emphasizes a balanced diet and eating lots of green leafy vegetables instead. “We also give some mild antibiotics for a period of 5 to 7 days after the procedure,” she explains.
7. Yoga can prevent graying of hair
Premature graying of hair cannot be avoided, yoga and calcium supplements can help in this. “Exercises like breathing exercises, early morning pranayam along with a good night’s sleep and a balanced diet can help prevent gray hair,” she suggests.
A successful hair transplant does not end with the surgery, it starts there. Following this care, avoiding harmful practices, and adopting healthy habits are essential to protecting your scalp and ensuring natural, lasting results.
