Bangalore 20 September 2024 – Australia’s La Trobe University and the Bangalore BioInnovation Centre (BBC) in the Indian state of Karnataka will establish a bio innovation corridor, paving the way for sharing skills, infrastructure and capabilities under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed today.
La Trobe University is ranked in the top one per cent of universities in the world. It has a proud and successful history in India, where it has worked with tertiary institutions and organisations on projects that have benefited both countries and helped develop India’s talented students through joint education opportunities.
Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre is jointly established by the Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India and aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the biotechnology sector.
The Bio Innovation Corridor will enable entrepreneurs, startup companies, researchers and investors from Karnataka and the Australian state of Victoria to leverage the infrastructure, capabilities and networks of the organisations and evaluate their Technology Readiness Level (TRL), Commercialisation Readiness Level (CRL) and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL).
This will enable BBC portfolio companies and La Trobe researchers to advance innovative biotechnologies in human health, medicine, food and agricultural technology, achieving regulatory approval and customer testing in both states.
Dr. Mohammed Adil AA, Managing Director, Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre, said, BBC encourages interdisciplinary advances in research and innovation towards entrepreneurship, creating work, wealth and well-being and empowering communities by creating employers rather than employees.
He said: “The Bio Innovation Corridor between Karnataka and Victoria is a strategic partnership that will promote market access, guidance, collaboration and investment in the life sciences sector. By connecting researchers, entrepreneurs and industry leaders from both regions, they aim to accelerate innovation leading to global unicorns.”
Professor Theo Farrell, Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University, said“We are very pleased to announce the creation of this bioinnovation corridor between Karnataka and Victoria, and to offer La Trobe University’s skills, infrastructure and capabilities to the startups, entrepreneurs and researchers associated with the Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre.
“La Trobe University aims to develop an ecosystem of research and innovation through co-location opportunities, including the future university city at our Melbourne campus in Bundoora and our four Victorian regional campuses.
“This reflects our keenness to open up opportunities for Karnataka-based entrepreneurs and startups to set up their R&D, innovation, product development and commercialisation facilities in collaboration with La Trobe through various innovative business partnership models to access the Australian market.”
Professor Farrell said La Trobe recently launched a dedicated Bio Innovation Hub to help startup companies develop new technologies in medical technology and drug delivery.
The MoU was signed by Professor Farrell and Dr. Mohammed Adil during the Victoria Connect event being held in Bangalore on 19 September 2024 and is part of showcasing opportunities between Victoria and Karnataka in the higher education and value-added technology sectors.
