The National Highways Authority of India has announced that it will discontinue the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for issuing car, jeep and van Fastag from February 1, 2026. This decision applies to all new FASTags issued in this category and is aimed at reducing the inconvenience faced by highway users after tag activation.
According to NHAI, the move is aimed at removing post-activation checks, which were causing delays and frequent follow-ups even if vehicle owners had already submitted valid documents at the time of purchase.
What does the new notification say?
Under the amended rules, new FASTags issued to private cars, jeeps and vans will not require KYV as a routine step. For existing FASTags, KYV has also been removed as a standard requirement. Verification will now be done only in specific cases where complaints are filed. These include issues like loose Fastag, issuance of wrong tag or suspected misuse.
If no complaint or discrepancy is flagged, the existing Car Fastag will continue to work without any additional KYV-related action on the part of the user.
New security measures introduced before activation
While post-activation KYV has been scrapped, NHAI has tightened checks before FASTag is activated. Issuing banks will now have to complete vehicle verification in advance.
FASTag activation will be allowed only after mandatory verification of vehicle details through VAHAN database. The earlier provision that allowed banks to activate FASTags first and verify the details later has been withdrawn.
In cases where vehicle information is not available on VAHAN, banks will have to rely on Registration Certificate (RC) verification before activation. NHAI has said that banks will be fully accountable for such activities. The same verification rules will also apply to FASTags sold through online channels.

How does it help FASTag users
The biggest change for vehicle owners is the removal of repeated KYV requests after FASTag activation. Many users reported that they were asked to re-upload vehicle photos and documents, or faced tag suspension despite completing initial verification.
By shifting all checks to the pre-activation stage, NHAI expects less disruption, quicker activation and less follow-up communication with banks or toll operators.
What was the KYV process earlier?
KYV, or Know Your Vehicle, was introduced to link each FASTag to the correct vehicle and prevent misuse. It required users to upload photographs of the vehicle showing the number plate and Fastag placement along with RC details. This process was valid for a certain period and in some cases had to be repeated.
With the new framework, NHAI has moved away from post-issuance KYV, revamping the way FASTags are issued from February 2026, while retaining strict upfront verification.
