Bengaluru, known for its notorious traffic, is once again in the news as an Uber user expressed his surprise at the exorbitant prices for short journeys within the city. The incident came to light when a user named Rajesh Bhattad shared a screenshot on a microblogging site which showed that Uber was displaying prices at approx. Rs 2,000 for a ride from Kempegowda International Airport to the south-eastern suburb of Electronic City, a distance of less than 40 kilometres.
Screenshots taken after midnight showed rising fares for various Uber services, including the cost of a ride home Rs 1,931 for Uber Go, Rs 1,846 for Uber Go sedan, 1,846 for Uber Premier, and a huge price Rs 2,495 for Uber XL. Typically, cab services impose night-time charges or surge pricing during late hours, causing fares to increase.
In response to the staggering prices, Bhattad opted for an alternative mode of transport and expressed his gratitude to Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) for providing the bus service. Bhattad’s screenshots and experience sparked discussion on social media, with many users agreeing that app-based cab fares in Bengaluru have become unreasonably high.
A user suggested a possible solution, recommending a simple hack to reduce Uber and Ola fares by 30-50%. The advice was to avoid selecting “airport area” as the pickup location, as fares are lower just outside the airport boundaries. However, some users admitted that although this hack can save money, it may present challenges in achieving last-mile connectivity.
The incident highlights the current problems faced by commuters in Bengaluru, emphasizing the need for affordable and accessible transport options, especially during peak hours or late nights. As discussions continue on public transport options and possible fare adjustments, the people of Bengaluru are anxiously awaiting a solution to the city’s notorious traffic and expensive cab rides.
