Streaming platform Crunchyroll removed and disabled comments sitewide, including on episodes and news articles.
Anime streaming platform Crunchyroll has announced that they have disabled comments on anime episodes and news articles on their site, as well as deleting all existing comments. The announcement was made in response to user feedback on social media platforms, but the platform refrained from giving the reason behind the decision. The move has sparked discussion about the possible reasons behind it.

Crunchyroll disables and deletes comments
According to IGN, the help page has disabled and removed comments to “protect its community” and reduce harmful content and misinformation on its site.
One user on X speculated that the decision was possibly the result of homophobic comments posted under Twilight Out of Focus, which aired on July 4. It is uncertain whether the decision was already being made or if the above incident triggered it.

Netizens react to Crunchyroll’s comment removal
The removal of the streaming platform’s long-standing features has certainly disappointed fans. Fans expressed their disappointment on Axe, where one user wrote, “Dang. I always loved scrolling up to the comments immediately after finishing an episode.”
“Why would they do that? Honestly it was fun to talk to people in the comment section,” wrote another user from X. “NGL comments can sometimes get highlighted after the app comes out,” wrote a third user.

One user shared their experience and wrote, “No, I’ve had Crunchyroll since 2012 and I love the comment section, I love finishing an episode and checking others’ opinions in the comments”, while another questioned, “I wonder why.”
Another user wrote, “Why…this was one of the best features of the app.”
