Fewer girls enroll in colleges than boys, and financial hurdles are one of the primary causes for this discrepancy among the poor.
“India has made huge progress over the years. The enrollment ratio for boys and girls is almost equal at the primary school level. But, for many economically disadvantaged groups, higher education is difficult. And it is often a girl who has to sacrifice,” said Behar.
“We hope that with this scholarship, we can support more girls in continuing their education. Because if a girl can complete higher education, she becomes empowered and can control the trajectory of her life.”
Premji’s father, Mohammad Hasham Premji, founded the Wipro in 1945. At the turn of the century, Premji became the richest billionaire in the country, when Y2K Boom raced to buy stocks of information technology companies to investors.
Premji then decided to establish the Azim Premji Foundation in 2001, with early corpus of $ 125 million wipro shares. In the last 24 years, Azeem Premji Foundation has trained thousands of teachers in 60 districts in six states to teach students better in government schools.
