Festive dehydration warning: Here’s how to keep yourself hydrated and safe while celebrating Dhanteras, Diwali, Halloween, Kali Puja, Bhai Dooj and Chhath Puja.
With Dhanteras, Diwali, Halloween, Kali Puja, Bhai Dooj and Chhath Puja, the festive season is in full swing and is often synonymous with indulgence – from delicious sweets to celebratory drinks. However, while it is important to enjoy these festivities, it is equally important to prioritize hydration.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Rajeshwari Panda, head of the department of dietetics at Medicover Hospital, Kharghar Navi Mumbai, explained why –
A) Dehydration Risk:
- thick blood: Dehydration can cause the blood to thicken, increasing the risk of blood clots.
- Headache and dizziness: Inadequate fluid intake can cause headaches, dizziness and fatigue.
- Kidney related problems: Long-term dehydration can put pressure on your kidneys and lead to kidney stones.
- Impaired cognitive function: Dehydration can affect your concentration, memory, and overall cognitive abilities.
B) Festive Foods and Drinks:
- Sugar Ingredients: Many festive dishes are high in sugar, which can contribute to dehydration.
- Liquor: Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production and can cause fluid loss.
Tips to stay hydrated during the festive season:
Dr. Rajeshwari Panda recommended –
- Drink water regularly: Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Choose water-rich foods: Eat fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber and spinach, which have high water content.
- Limit sugary drinks: Reduce your intake of sugary beverages like soda, juice and sweet tea.
- Monitor alcohol consumption: If you are drinking alcohol, alternate drinking water to stay hydrated.
- Listen to your body: Pay attention to your body’s thirst signals. If you feel thirsty, drink water immediately.
- Avoid excessive salt consumption: Excessive salt consumption can cause fluid retention.
- Eating mindfully: Practice mindful eating to avoid overeating and subsequently requiring excessive fluids to aid digestion.
- Carry a water bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times to ensure you have water available when you need it.
By making hydration a priority during the festive season, you can help maintain your overall health and well-being, ensuring a joyous and memorable celebration.
