Novelist Mary Shelley’s monster has never looked more fashionable. His novel Frankenstein was recently made into a film and released on Netflix on November 7.

The Internet is focusing on something unexpected: the film’s brilliant, terrifying, maximalist costume design. Actors Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac’s elaborate looks included bird-plumed headgear, voluminous ballgowns, satin robes and extremely long gauzy veils in vibrant and rich colors.
A large part of the discussion is due to the film’s costume designer, Kate Hawley. Hawley is no stranger to the visionary world of Guillermo del Toro – she’s previously worked with him on films like Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim. At Frankenstein, he and his team created almost every costume from scratch using custom textiles and complex techniques.
Here’s a look at some of the standout looks.
Wrap-Around Feather Headgear
One of the standout visual highlights is Mia Goth in an elaborate cobalt ensemble, with feathered hairpieces spread like wings. The off-the-shoulder tulle dress, structured fan and gem choker depict Victorian extravagance with a surreal, almost doll-like accuracy. It’s already being dubbed “Victorian Cyber-Baroque” in fan accounts.

Mia Goth also plays the mother of the main character, Victor, in the film. In one scene, she is seen draped in a pleated crimson gown, with a dramatic high collar and a large hat that bordered on operatic. But it’s the impossibly long red gauze veil covering her face that has mesmerized fashion lovers. The circular headpiece that frames her face like a sculptural bonnet is trailed by a long, sheer red veil.
black clothes
We absolutely cannot forget Victor’s (Oscar Isaac) look in the film. This look, in particular, features Oscar draped in a loose, dark green satin robe over a burgundy inner robe. His trousers are of dark velvet with a dark red check pattern. The color palette maintains the look in the Gothic style without embellishment. This outfit also symbolizes this character, who is driven and passionate about achieving his goal.
darkness meets femininity
Here, Mia wears a structured, full-skirted gown with a deep floral pattern in deep red and black tones. The dress features a fitted bodice and long sleeves while maintaining the classic Victorian silhouette. She continues her series of extravagant headgear by wearing a bright red bonnet with gathered detail around the brim. She wears black mesh gloves that extend to the wrists, giving the costume a more formal, period-accurate finish.
Old time royal atmosphere
This look of Mia gives off a dramatic, retro feel. She wears a green ballgown with a patterned bodice that features a swirling black and green circular design (reminiscent of marbled or psychedelic motifs). The sleeves are the main attraction, made of green translucent, puffy chiffon fabric with ruffled cuffs.
