Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday made a derogatory statement against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
The Assam Chief Minister said that if Ajmal was planning a second or third marriage, he should do so before the Lok Sabha elections as polygamy would be banned in the state after the elections.

“If he (Ajmal) is considering remarrying, he should do so now, because after the elections we are going to bring UCC in Assam. After this, it could be a problem, because to practice polygamy He may also face arrest. So, if he is planning to get married before the elections come, I can attend his wedding also. It (polygamy) is not illegal yet. As far as “I know, he has only one wife. If he is planning to do so then it is fine. He will have to recite his marital vows for the second time and now more times before the elections,” the Assam Chief Minister told reporters. “However, polygamy will be banned after the elections. He may invite us too.”
The BJP government in Assam is planning to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) under which polygamy will be banned. Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to pass the UCC bill in February this year.
Uttarakhand Assembly passes UCC bill
The Chief Minister had earlier said that Assam would be the third state after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to introduce a bill on UCC. However, tribal communities will be exempted from its scope.
UCC implies that all sections of the society, irrespective of their religion, will be treated equally as per the National Civil Code, which will apply equally to all, including matters relating to marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, adoption, Areas like inheritance and succession will be covered. Badruddin Ajmal is the only AIDUF member in the Lok Sabha from Dhubri. Ajmal, a perfume businessman, is bidding for a fresh term in the lower house from the same constituency in the 2024 elections. Ajmal is a well-known critic of the Uniform Civil Code and has called it “anti-Quranic and anti-Islamic”.
It is noteworthy that the Assam Cabinet had last month repealed the ‘Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935’, which was criticized by minority leaders in the state and across the country.
