Amidst the intense developments of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan leaving the Congress and joining the BJP on Tuesday, a light moment sparked a lot of laughter but left Chavan embarrassed among his new colleagues. After officially joining the BJP, in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other senior BJP leaders, Ashok Chavan mistakenly called Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar “Mumbai Congress President”.

“I have joined BJP with a desire to contribute to the development work of the Narendra Modi-led central government. This is an unconditional step taken without asking for any post. Ashok Chavan said, this is a new innings for me after serving politics for 38 years.
Congress understands that Ashok Chavan’s absence will hurt the party in Maharashtra, especially ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
“It is a big loss for the party. With his departure, the party may bid goodbye to at least two Lok Sabha seats and half a dozen assembly seats from the Marathwada region,” a senior Congress leader who has worked closely with him told HT on Monday.
