Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant on Friday asserted that his comments against Shaina NC are being ‘misinterpreted’ as Shaina has lodged an FIR with the Mumbai Police. The development came as the National Commission for Women termed his ‘imported goods’ jibe against the rival politician as “highly inappropriate” and demanded action from the police and the Election Commission.
“We all know this Maha Vinash Aghadi Don’t respect women…Mother Mumba Devi’s blessings are with me, I am a woman but not ‘goods’. If you have to make derogatory remarks against a woman then it is an FIR and the law will take its course. Mumbai Police has registered a case under BNS sections 79 and 356 (2). When you insult a woman’s dignity, do you think that the woman will remain silent? The women of Maharashtra will give them a befitting reply,” the Shiv Sena leader told ANI on Friday evening.
Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on November 20, with counting of votes for all 288 constituencies taking place on November 23.
Sawant, meanwhile, argues that his comment was a general statement about outsiders being inappropriate in the local context. He insisted on Friday evening that Shaina NC was a friend and former colleague whom he respected. The Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA also highlighted his 55-year-old political career and accused his opponents of trying to malign his reputation.
“I never told her name. I just said that an outsider will not be able to work here. It is their habit to create ruckus,” he said while speaking to ANI.
The NCW also joined the debate on Friday with president Vijaya Rahatkar urging the Election Commission to take “immediate action”.
“Shiv Sena (Thackeray) MP Arvind Sawant has given a very inappropriate statement against Shiv Sena (Shinde) Assembly candidate @ShainaNC. Diwali is going on, Lakshmi Puja is happening. In such a holy festival, responsible public representatives like MPs make such statements. “Is against women, which is completely wrong. @MumbaiPolice should take appropriate action as per law on the FIR lodged by Shaina NC.”
