Breastfeeding vs Vaccines? Here’s what your child needs for maximum protection.

Breastfeeding is often considered one of the best ways to nourish your newborn, but it goes far beyond just providing essential nutrients. Breast milk plays an important role in activating and developing your baby’s immune system, protecting it from various infections and diseases.

immunological components of breast milk

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Razia Galil Bhasha, lactation consultant at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Bengaluru, revealed that breast milk is a complex, dynamic fluid filled with immunological components important for the health of the infant. These components include:

  • Antibodies: One of the most important elements of breast milk are antibodies, specifically immunoglobulin A (IgA). IgA covers the baby’s intestinal mucosa, creating a barrier against pathogens. These antibodies help neutralize viruses and bacteria, preventing infections in the digestive tract and other mucosal surfaces.
  • white blood cells: Breast milk contains white blood cells, including macrophages and lymphocytes, which play important roles in fighting infection. These cells help destroy harmful bacteria and viruses, helping the baby’s developing immune system.
  • Bioactive Factors: Breast milk is rich in bioactive factors such as lactoferrin, lysozyme and oligosaccharides. Lactoferrin binds iron, inhibiting bacterial growth, while lysozyme helps break down bacterial cell walls. Oligosaccharides promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, helping to establish a healthy microbiome.

Benefits of breastfeeding for baby’s immunity

Breastfeeding offers countless benefits that go beyond basic nutrition. According to Razia Galil Bhasha, following are some of the major ways in which breastfeeding helps in boosting the immunity of the child –

  1. Protection from infection: Immunological components present in breast milk provide immediate protection against many types of infections. Studies have shown that breastfed infants have lower rates of respiratory infections, ear infections, and gastrointestinal diseases than formula-fed infants.
  2. Lower risk of chronic diseases: Breastfeeding has been linked to a lower risk of developing chronic diseases such as allergies, asthma and autoimmune diseases. The protective effect is believed to arise from the anti-inflammatory properties of breast milk and its role in establishing a healthy immune response.
  3. Enhanced Immune System Development: Mother’s milk helps train and develop the baby’s immune system. Exposure to different antigens through breast milk helps the baby’s immune system to recognize different pathogens and respond appropriately, preventing it from overreacting to harmless substances (which can cause allergies) or reacting to harmful substances. But the probability of failing to react is reduced.

Breastfeeding and vaccination: an important partnership

While breastfeeding provides important immunological benefits, it is not a substitute for vaccination. Vaccines are designed to provide targeted immunity against specific diseases, which breast milk alone cannot provide. Here’s why both are important:

  • Targeted disease prevention: Vaccinations protect against specific, potentially life-threatening diseases such as measles, polio, and whooping cough. These vaccines stimulate the child’s immune system to produce a strong, specific immune response, ensuring long-term protection.
  • Comprehensive Immune Protection: Breastfeeding and vaccination work together to provide comprehensive immune protection. Breast milk provides broad-spectrum immunity and strengthens the baby’s overall immune system, while vaccines ensure targeted protection against specific pathogens. This combination helps ensure that the baby is well protected from a variety of diseases.

Additional tips for new moms:

  • Ask for support: Breastfeeding can be a learning medium for both mother and child. Don’t hesitate to seek help from lactation consultants or breastfeeding support groups if needed.
  • Stay informed: There are many reliable resources available to answer your questions about breastfeeding and its benefits.
  • Trust your gut: You and your child are a team. Pay attention to your baby’s cues and adjust your feeding routine accordingly.

Razia Galil said, “By understanding the remarkable connection between breastfeeding and immunology, you can feel empowered to make informed decisions about your baby’s health. Breastfeeding is a beautiful journey that provides lasting benefits for you and your baby. Breastfeeding is a remarkable way to support your baby’s health, providing essential nutrients and powerful immunological benefits that protect against infections and diseases.

The expert concluded, “However, it is important to remember that breastfeeding does not replace the need for vaccination. Breastfeeding and vaccination together provide the best protection, ensuring that your baby is healthy and well protected. By understanding the importance of both breastfeeding and vaccination, postpartum mothers can make informed decisions that promote their babies’ well-being, giving them the best possible start in life.
