From diabetes to COVID-19 and cancer, this AI model uses the Chinese method of checking the tongue for diseases.
The tongue can tell a lot about our health. The colour and texture of the tongue can tell us about the diseases we may have. Using this information, researchers from Iraq and Australia have developed an AI model that can help detect diseases and conditions by analysing the tongue. The AI model can detect diseases with an accuracy rate of 98%.
How this AI model works:
Senior study author Ali Al-Naji, who teaches at the Middle Technical University in Baghdad and the University of South Australia, explained how the AI model works – he said people with diabetes have a yellow tongue, while cancer patients have a purple tongue with a thick greasy coating. Acute stroke patients usually have a red tongue with an abnormal shape. Anemia can be detected by a white tongue, while severe cases of COVID-19 can be detected by a dark red tongue. Vascular, gastrointestinal or asthmatic problems are detected by an indigo or purple tongue.

Accuracy of AI models in determining diseases
Ali Al-Naji said that this study is based on the traditional Chinese medicine practice of determining medical conditions by examining the tongue. The artificial intelligence model was trained with 5200 images to determine the color and texture of the tongue and understand underlying medical conditions. 60 tongue images from two teaching hospitals in the Middle East were used to test the accuracy of the AI model.
Javan Chahal, a professor at the University of South Australia and co-author of the study, said that soon the AI model will be used in the form of a smartphone app to detect various diseases – diabetes, stroke, anemia, asthma, liver problems, gallbladder problems and COVID-19. This will also ensure accessibility of AI models to all. Javan Chahal said, “These results confirm that computerized tongue analysis is a safe, efficient, user-friendly and affordable method for disease screening that supports modern methods with centuries-old practice.”
