West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu was told by Kolkata that the admission process of graduate courses in 460 colleges under 17 state universities has started after publication of merit list due to legal issues.
He said that the first phase of the admission process will continue till August 25.

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed at the order of a Calcutta High Court, in which the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board was asked to scrap and restore the merit list of the Joint Entrance Examination for Medical and Allies for 2024-25.
After the apex court order, while WBjeb published the merit list of JEE candidates writing its papers in April, the Department of Higher Education began uploading the names of candidates in the name of a central portal for admission to UG courses from 22 August.
In an X post, the Education Minister said that 3,09,667 valid applicants have enrolled for admission in 460 colleges associated with 17 state universities.
He said, “Due to legal complications, the publishing merit list was delayed, causing us to be deeply concerned with the candidates and their parents. Now this process has started allotting seats between candidates based on its preferences.”
Basu said that the first phase process in uploading the merit list will continue till August 25.
There are 4.02,557 seats where candidates can study in more than 100 subjects.
Earlier on August 7, the Calcutta High Court worked in the “clear violation of the first order” about the reservation of OBC candidates and directed it to resume the merit list and publish a new panel, which provides 7 percent reservation for 66 classes of OBC candidates recognized by the departments of West Bengal backward classes before 2010.
However, on Friday, a bench of the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday that the merit list for admission to UG courses in various colleges has been uploaded to the Central Entrance Portal and hoped that other outstanding problems will be addressed in this way.
He said, “Due to some legal wrangs, we had to wait for the publication of results for several days. But it was not intentionally. We will ensure that no candidate is suffering due to delay in publication of results,” he said.
