Actor Kangana Ranaut has talked about a dispute around comedian Kunal Kamra, who recently faced a backlash for his joke about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde.
Addressing the matter, Kangana said to Annie: “It is not right to humiliate anyone … You are disobeying someone’s work in the name of comedy. Shinde ji used to run a rickshaw long ago and has achieved a lot of herself. For two minutes of fame.”
Kunal recently found himself at the center of controversy when he made fun of Shinde by working again by a song from Bollywood film. Dil toh pagal haiIndirectly refer to them as a ‘traitor’ for their political revaluation. His remarks were fulfilled with a sharp criticism of Shiv Sena members, demanding many leaders to apologize.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned Kunal’s comments, calling him a form of “low-level comedy” and claiming that the freedom of speech and satire is understood, some limitations should be respected. Shinde, who initially kept quiet on the matter, later responded to the controversy saying, “We understand the satire, but there should be a limit.”
Taking a veil swipe on his critics, Shinde compared Kunal’s joke Betel (Contract) to speak against individuals. He also stated that Kamra had earlier made controversial remarks about the major data, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Supreme Court, journalists and influential industrialists. “This is not freedom of speech, it is working for someone,” Shinde commented.
In particular, Shiv Sena activists had hit a storm at the Habitat Comedy Club, which hosted Kunal’s show, and barbaric it. Several party leaders were also detained and the Mumbai Police arrested the venue for damage.
The incident has ruled the debate on the boundaries of comedy and political satire in India, rapidly divided into opinion whether Kunal’s comment falls within the scope of acceptable humor or crosses the line in target defamation.
