New Delhi. Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp banned more than 79 lakh accounts in the country in March 2023. The company has taken this action under the new IT Rules 2021. The company banned 79,54,000 accounts between March 1-31. In the month of February, WhatsApp had banned more than 76 lakh accounts in the country.
WhatsApp said in its monthly compliance report that about 1,430,000 of these accounts were actively banned, before any reports from users. WhatsApp, the most popular messaging platform in the country with more than 50 crore users, received a record 12,782 complaint reports in the country in December, of which action was taken on 11.

Action was taken in February also, more than 76 lakh accounts were banned
The company had banned 7,628,000 accounts between February 1-29. Before any reports from users, approximately 1,424,000 of these accounts were actively banned.

Accounts Actioned refers to reports where WhatsApp took action based on the report and taking action means either banning an account or resulting in the reinstatement of previously banned accounts.
