In Namibia’s Sperrgebiet area, the miners who went to search for diamonds found something that changed history. In 2008, the miners have a banned mining area with the Skeleton Coast. The remains of wood and metal were seen from here, but after investigation, it was found that it is not something like something, 500 years ago, the treasure that was being searched for centuries.

It was nothing else, the 16th -century Portuguese ship Bom Jesus, who went missing in 1533. This ship, buried under the sand for about 500 years, is now considered one of the biggest marine discoveries in Africa. This is not just a ship but the treasure, which was very important in terms of history as well as economy. Think what would have been in that era that the entire gold and silver ship was filled.

Gold-silver ships

About 2,000 gold coins, ivory, copper bricks, silver and shipping equipment were found from the ship. Experts say that these goods reflect the trade of the era from Portugal to Africa and India when Europe dominated the sea routes to Asia. The ship has also been found on the ship of the rule of King Joao III of Portugal. It is said that a severe storm pushed the ship towards the dangerous coast of Namibia, where it collided with rocks and drowned.

Treasure turned out to be safe even after 500 years

According to historians, it is a wonderful event to remain safe even after so long. Sand and dry climate preserved it in a natural way. This ship not only tells the story of business but also shows that Africa was an important part of global trade and politics at that time. According to marine archaeologist Ditter Noli, the ship was carrying goods for Europe’s famous Fugar banking dynasty.

Who will have a treasure?

Although the ship was Portuguese, it is now legally the property of Namibia under the Treaty of UNESCO. Portugal did not make any claim and it was described as an example of cooperation after colonialism. The Namibia government is now planning to display these items in a special museum. Although the Skeleton Coast is notorious for the sinking of the ships, but the credit for keeping Bom Jesus safe goes to the Namib Maruthal, where the ship was buried in the sand due to strong winds and the treasure was found in a safe position.
