The heat can not only wreak havoc on the internal functions of the body, but can also take a toll on the health of the skin and hair. Just like the skin, hair too needs extra care during the hot months.
How does the sun affect your hair?
When skin is exposed to the sun, it becomes dehydrated, which can lead to a feeling of tightness. “The scalp and hair face the same challenges. Constant exposure to ultraviolet rays strips the hair of its natural oils and damages the hair cuticle, leading to hair breakage, split ends and weakening of the hair’s protein structure,” says Dr Bhavook Dhir, dermatologist at PSRI.
Maintaining Your Hair
Dr Anil KV Minj, dermatologist at Marengo Asia Hospital, Faridabad, recommends using mild shampoos and conditioners with light formulas to fight oily hair. For oily hair, he suggests using clay conditioners to keep your hair fresh. Minj also advises against using heat styling tools for long hours and wearing tight caps to avoid bacterial or fungal infections.
importance of food
According to nutritionist Kavita Devgan, eating the right foods makes a lot of difference for healthy hair. She suggests the following to nourish your hair:
Protein: Protein is essential for hair growth and preventing hair loss. Pistachios, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese and soy products such as tofu and tempeh are high in protein.
Vitamins A and C: Vitamin A aids in cell growth while vitamin C helps repair damaged hair. Pumpkin, amla and leafy vegetables like spinach and kale are good sources of both.
Healthy fats: Omega-3 fatty acids are important fats that help hydrate the scalp and hair. Nourish your hair with fish, avocado, chia seeds, and walnuts.
