Being a new mom is one of the most incredible journeys filled with love, joy and precious moments, but it can also be quite challenging because between all the feedings, diaper changes and late nights of not sleeping, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself, but you matter too! You deserve moments of peace, joy and self-love every day and don’t forget – a happy and well-rested mom means a healthy and bubbly baby.

To be the best version of themselves for their baby, as well as for their own well-being, new mothers should make time for themselves and take self-care breaks. Here are some simple things they can do every day to refresh themselves –

1. Take brief and mindful breaks,

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Deepika Agarwal, Director, Obstetrics & Gynecology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, suggested, “Even just five or ten minutes to indulge in deep breathing exercises or mindfulness training can have a profound positive impact on a new mother’s mental health. These small intervals of calm can reduce stress and anxiety, making it easier to handle parenting responsibilities.”

Saurabh Bothra, CEO of Habuild and a certified yoga instructor, said, “Even a 5-minute break can make a huge difference. Step outside to get some fresh air, do some stretches or simply close your eyes, remember your blessings and take deep breaths. These small moments help calm your mind and reduce stress.”

2. Do stretching or workout,

Although it may be difficult to get back on a fitness regimen, Dr Deepika Agarwal suggests that taking a short walk or doing some light stretching can be energising. Engaging in physical activity helps reduce the physical stress of carrying and feeding a baby, produces endorphins and boosts energy levels.

Saurabh Bothra said, “Having a baby is another great reason to prioritise your fitness! Light exercise, such as a short walk with your baby or a quick workout at home, can boost your mood and energy. Even 10-15 minutes a day can make a big difference. You can also try simple yoga poses or stretches to feel more relaxed.”

3. Eat a healthy breakfast or stay hydrated and snack mindfully:

New mothers often neglect to eat or eat unhealthy snacks during busy times. “Keeping nutritious snacks on hand such as fruit, almonds or smoothies ensures that parents are giving their bodies the energy they need to care for their baby,” suggests Dr Deepika Agarwal.

Saurabh Bothra said, “When you’re busy with your little one, it’s easy to forget to drink water and eat well. Keep a bottle of regular or flavoured water with you and sip throughout the day. Keep healthy snacks like fruit, nuts or yoghurt ready that you can quickly munch on. Staying hydrated and nourished will keep your energy levels up.”

4. Delegate tasks and ask for help:

Dr Deepika Agarwal emphasises, “It is acceptable for new mothers to delegate responsibilities to family members or ask a partner to help feed the baby. Accepting help can provide you with the necessary relief and reduce your stress.”

5. Develop a hobby and indulge in it:

Dr Deepika Agarwal said, “Engaging in fun activities like reading a few pages of a book or listening to music can help new mothers rediscover their sense of self. These little pleasures relieve stress and boost happiness, providing an escape from the routine of taking care of a baby every day.”

6. Connect with loved ones:

“Have a little chat with a friend or family member. Ask for help when you need it! Sharing your feelings and experiences can lighten your mood and make you feel less alone,” advises Saurabh Bothra.

7. Make naps a priority:

Saurabh Bothra emphasises, “Whenever your baby sleeps, you should also try to rest. Even if it is a short nap, it can help you recharge. Create a calming bedtime routine for yourself so that you can fall asleep easily whenever you get the chance.”

Whenever life takes a new challenging turn, we should always find 10-15 minutes of relaxation and self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with these small steps and make self-care a part of your daily routine.

You deserve it and your baby will benefit from having a happy, healthy mom! Especially for new moms, taking care of yourself is not selfish and these small but meaningful acts can rejuvenate and fulfill them, allowing them to take better care of their baby and themselves.
