In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Neha Tripathi, counselling psychologist at TopRankers, provided invaluable insights on how to deal with mental health challenges during the exam preparation phase. She asked to consider the following points to manage mental health while preparing for competitive exams –
1. Encourage leisure and leisure activities:
Don’t underestimate the power of breaks! Schedule them regularly and indulge in activities you enjoy. Whether it’s painting, playing a sport or catching up with friends, these leisure moments will help you relax, refresh and focus on your studies with renewed vigour.
2. Celebrate achievements:
Acknowledge your progress, whether it’s big or small. Recognizing your accomplishments will boost your confidence and keep you motivated on the path to success.
3. Promote healthy lifestyle habits:
Emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, nutritious meals, and adequate sleep. These habits can improve cognitive function and mood, ultimately leading to better test performance.
Further emphasizing on this, Professor (Dr) Padmakali Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, IILM University Gurugram provided deep insights on this important aspect. According to her, “Maintaining mental balance and relieving stress and anxiety is most important for young people to succeed and be happy in life. For this, young people should imbibe the spirit of positive thinking and optimism at every step. This is a continuous process that needs to be diligently practiced with maximum sincerity and dedication on a regular basis. Positive thinking brings positive emotions and optimism which motivates the mind to focus on finding solutions and learning constructively from failures instead of focusing on failures and getting frustrated.”
Nishi Khosla, Career Counsellor at Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Lucknow, also emphasised the importance of mental health among young achievers. She said, “In today’s fast-paced world, the constant pursuit of excellence often takes a toll on mental health. As individuals strive for success, their psychological health can also be affected. Recognising this, schools, colleges and communities are called upon to create nurturing environments where individuals can openly express their concerns without fear of judgement. This includes fostering a culture that values mental health as much as academic or professional achievement. Equipping individuals with coping mechanisms is essential. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation and stress management provide invaluable tools to navigate the ups and downs of life’s journey. In addition, fostering a growth mindset, where setbacks are viewed as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles, promotes resilience and perseverance.”
He suggested, “It is important to find a balance between ambition and self-care. Setting realistic goals, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and making time for hobbies and relaxation are important components of this balance. Additionally, it is paramount to encourage young aspirants to seek support from friends, family, mentors, or mental health professionals. It is essential to not stigmatize failure and accept imperfection, recognizing them as inherent parts of the human experience. By celebrating their unique journey and developing self-compassion, individuals can build a strong foundation for mental well-being.”
