New Delhi. This year the government has blocked 18 OTT platforms serving obscene content. India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting found that obscene and in some cases pornographic content is being shown on 18 OTT platforms, which is against Indian law. In this sequence, 19 websites, 10 mobile apps (out of which 7 are available on Google Play Store and 3 on Apple’s App Store) and 57 social media accounts related to them have also been banned.
Announcing the action, Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur stressed that content creators cannot use ‘creative expression’ as an excuse to promote offensive content. This action was taken under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, with inputs from other Ministries/Departments of the Government of India and domain experts having expertise in media and entertainment, women’s rights and child rights.

Why were these 18 OTT platforms blocked?
The ministry found that the content hosted on these platforms was highly obscene, derogatory to women and in many cases completely obscene. The films being shown on these platforms also included inappropriate depictions of relationships, such as student-teacher relationships and adultery in family relationships. Let us tell you that this type of content violates many laws, such as Section 67 and 67 of the IT Act, Section 292 of the IPC, Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, etc.

Some apps included in the blocked list also include those which have gained a lot of popularity. Of these, one has more than 1 crore downloads and two have 50 lakh downloads. All these OTT platforms used to share their trailer and link on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) to attract people towards their app. He also had more than 32 lakh followers on social media accounts.
Although the government always encourages the development of the OTT industry, it also emphasizes that the platforms should always show responsible content. This action has been taken to maintain ethical standards in the digital entertainment sector.
