162 students rescue residential residential school in Jharkhand after heavy rains

A senior official said that at least 162 students were stranded at a private residential school in East Singhbham district of Jharkhand, which was rescued by police on Sunday after heavy rains.

Students were trapped in a school in Pandarsoli on Haldipokhar-Kovali Road in Kovali police station area since Saturday night after flooding in the campus due to heavy rains.

“We came to know that 162 students of Lav Kush residential school were trapped as the school premises were submerged due to heavy rains. As soon as the school building was submerged, the teachers shifted all the students to the roof, where they spent the night.

The Superintendent of Police (Rural) told PTI, “It is being informed around 5.30 am today, police officers and fire brigade teams participated on the spot and rescued the students with the help of villagers one by one.”

He said that boats were used for rescue operations while NDRF was required.

However, the police team rescued the students before the arrival of the NDRF team, he said.

Officer-Bhari Kovali Police Station, Dhananjay Paswan said that the single-storey residential school building was completely submerged due to rain.

“The school has been closed even further notices,” he said.

Local students were sent to their homes, while the district administration was arranging to send other students to their homes across the district, which said Dumariya, Ghatshila, Musabani and Jamshedpur, Paswan.

Meanwhile, the district administration of Eastern Singhbham and Kharswan-Khahrson gave a warning in view of the possibility of sudden increase in water levels in Kharrakai and Subarnarekha besides the release of water from Riyangpur dam in Odisha.

Karna Satyarthi, Deputy Commissioner of Eastern Singhbhum, appealed to the people living in the rivers and the catchment areas of the Subaronrekha in the case of a sudden surge in the rivers and to follow the advisor to the administration.

Satyarthi instructed Deputy Division Officer, Municipal Bodies Officers, Block Development Officers and Circle Officers to be vigilant, and sought cooperation from the public.

He asked people to contact the District Control Room for any assistance.

Serakela-Kharsawan Deputy Commissioner Nitish Kumar Singh directed the district officials and technical units to be high alert to fulfill any exaggeration.

He asked the authorities to identify the submerged areas close to sensitive areas, especially rivers, as well as alerted people through Chandil Dam and public address systems.

He instructed the District Civil Surgeon to keep all health centers on alert and ensure deployment of mobile medical units and ambulances to complete any emergency.

On June 30, an ‘orange alert’ has been issued for khunti, Ranchi, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Saraikela-Kharswan and West Singhbhum, and it haven is been Issued for Gumla, Garhwa, Garhwa, Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Latehar and Lohardaga on July 1.

In view of the warning by the Meteorological Department, Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Sunday asked the officials of the Disaster Management Department and the district administration to be vigilant.

“The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall in the districts of the state for the next few days. The Disaster Management Department and all the district administration should maintain constant coordination with the Meteorological Department and other agencies, be cautious, and work to provide support to the public in all situations,” Soron posted on X.
