Common reactions to trauma that we should know about:

replay events: When we are hurt by something or a situation, we have a tendency to keep replaying the events in our mind – every time, the same painful feeling occurs, and we often end up in the same situation.

drives: When we keep doing this, even subtle things can act as triggers for us and make us feel traumatized, and bring us back to the same experience.

numbness and dissociation: We feel distracted and isolated from reality, and unable to connect with the present because we are so immersed in the past.

anxiety and hypervigilance: We live in a pattern of extreme alertness and anxiety all the time. We feel that the heart is beating faster and the mind is getting disturbed. We are also easily startled.

cognitive issues: We continue to have problems with weak memory and have difficulty in focus and concentration.

sudden and vivid memories: We keep having sudden vivid memories of the traumatic experience and fall into the trap of overthinking and feeling the exact emotions we felt before.

shame, guilt: We feel an increase of negative emotions – shame, guilt and self-blame. We often blame ourselves for feeling a certain way.

risky behavior: We become impulsive and adopt risky behaviour. When we are angry we also have difficulty controlling our reactions.

avoid things: We try to avoid things, situations and people that remind us of the trauma. We also try to self-isolate.

distorted view of the world: We project our anger and trauma onto the world and have a distorted and negative view of the world in general. We become cynical about everything and are unable to see the positive things in life.
